Bike, Hike, and Paddle

From January of 1996 to October of 2008, this site was called "Chuck's Backpacking Bonanza" and was hosted on AOL until they ceased such hosting. Over the years, I expanded the site to include much more than only backpacking, so the name is now Bike, Hike, and Paddle. Enjoy my efforts!

Clive, Iowa Greenbelt Trail

I began at the Campbell Recreation Area (12385 Woodlands Pkwy.)  This paved pathway is in Des Moines suburb of Clive and offers a string of trailside parks as it twists and turns following the scenic Walnut Creek. To reach the recreation area from I-35 northbound, take Exit 125 for US 6/Hickman Road. Turn left (west) onto US 6/Hickman Road, and go 0.8 mile. Turn left at NW 128th St., and travel south for a half mile. Turn left onto Woodlands Parkway, and follow it for 0.3 mile until you see the entrance to the Campbell Recreation Area on your left.

A lush border of trees gives you the feeling of being away from it all, and numerous well-marked trails lead you to parks, city hall, and the public library.

This 11 mile urban recreational trail in Clive is paved asphalt and concrete and is in good repair.  It forms part of the Central Iowa Trails network, a busy recreational trail that runs through Polk and Dallas Counties.  Clive's logo, "Distinct by Nature," is derived from the beautiful and scenic trail and is recognized as a jewel of the city and landmark feature of the community.

Mountain bike trails are available in an area called "The Wild..."

Walnut Creek offers picturesque views around every turn...

The trail is grade-separated and passes under most major cross streets including Interstates 35/80.

On the west end of the trail in Lions Park, you’ll have the opportunity to easily connect to two other trails: the Heart of the Warrior Trail, which heads 3 miles west, and the well-loved Raccoon River Valley Trail, which travels west and then north for more than 80 miles to Jefferson. From the park, you’ll travel east on the Greenbelt, winding through pleasant suburban neighborhoods.
